A Mass For My Son

When my son passed away I received many condolences from family and friends. A few were for a mass to be offered for my son. At Spirit of Christ Catholic Community, my parish, three persons requested masses for my son. I was surprised when a friend from the Shrine of St. Anne also requested a mass and today at eleven-thirty, a mass was celebrated for him.

When  priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions:
1) To offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the church.
2) To offer the Mass in union with the whole church for the good of the whole church.
3) To offer Mass for a particular intention such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died.

My family did not have the custom of requesting masses so I grew up not knowing this beautiful part of praying for someone that has died. Now that I am aware of the custom, I also will begin requesting
Masses for those that have gone before me.

My granddaughter and I attended mass this morning at the Shrine of St. Anne and when I heard my son's name mentioned I felt a tug at my heart. It certainly made me feel good knowing that special prayers during mass were for my loved one.

After mass we went to lunch at Amici's Italian Restaurant and had fun taking selfies! A lovely Sunday with my beautiful granddaughter!
