Readers Galore

For readers, there is nothing better than curling up somewhere comfortable and reading a good book. Most of the people who read have their favorite stories and characters. Yesterday, December 8, 2015, the Spirit of Christ Catholic Community book club met at a member's home. Fourteen women entered the holiday decorated home and each person brought something good to eat.

We discussed A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. It was a story about a grumpy man who had his very own opinions on how life should be lived. It is also a love story. The characters all come together and first impressions are erased and new ideas emerge about the characters. Some of the women thought their husbands were like Ove. Many knew someone who acted like Ove. We decided that we all have a little bit of Ove in us.


Socialized medicine was discussed and it was interesting to hear about some members who had been hospitalized in foreign countries. Some believed it was a good system until it was mentioned that there is a long waiting time for certain operations. Some liked how everything is taken care of and all a person needs to do is pay the taxes; 65% to 85%!

When the book discussion was exhausted, we ate. What fun trying the different dishes of macaroni, meat balls, toasted potatoes, deviled eggs, cranberry cheese ball with jalapeno, small meat pockets, large pretzels, quiche, and desserts galore. A chocolate cake was a big hit and the person who made it told us how easy it had been to make it. "Box of cake mix, can of pie fruit, and mix it all together. It sounded easy enough that I may try it! Conversations could be heard within different groups and then someone would yell across the room for an opinion. The self-timer on my camera was used to get everyone in the picture.

It was a nice party, full of fun and chatter, and someone remarked, "What a neat way to jump-start the Christmas season!"
