A Gem in Welby, Colorado

Sunday, October 1, 2017, a friend and I drove to Welby, Colorado to attend mass at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church. This was a first for me and a surprise to find the beautiful church next to farm lands. The church was dedicated on May 12, 1912 and in 1920 a school was built and currently has around 146 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. The first thing I noticed as I parked my car was a large white Pieta in the front lawn.

Entering the church we were greeted with a cheerful good morning by six greeters. They made us feel very welcome to the church. The ceiling of the church reminded me of a mosque (I don't know why because I have never been in a mosque yet the tiles or painted squares did remind me of something foreign.)

Mass proceeded as usual and after the celebration was over I walked around the church and took pictures of the beautiful church. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is over the main altar and St. Joseph holding Jesus is on the right side of the altar while on the left niche was the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The last supper was carved below the ornate main altar. The stations of the cross were charming and dainty, like three D pictures. Another Pieta in color and a tall antique looking statue were in a room at the rear of the church.

About twenty persons gathered outside and listened to a lady talking about a fund raiser to help  return Our Lady of Visitation back to life. The "little church" was closed by the Archdiocese and the parishioners of the church want it reopened so that it can become a vital place of worship again. Some of the parishioners of Our Lady of Visitation attend mass at Assumption Parish while waiting to see if their little church will be opened again.

After our wonderful experience at a different church, four of us went to breakfast at Great Scotts;a 50's type diner.
