My quest is to find an apple that, to me, tastes better than the Delicious. So far, I have had no luck. Maybe it's a matter of taste, the sweetness, the crunchiness, the tartness or the crispness of an apple for individual likes and dislikes. Anyway, one can choose from a variety of apples at the grocery store. The price ranges from eighty-nine cents a pound to two-forty-nine. The Delicious apple seems to be the least expensive.
In researching apples I found that the:
Delicious is crunchy with a sweet taste.
Golden Delicious is crisp yet sweet.
Honey Crisp is sweet and juicy.
Fuji has a crunch and very sweet.
Gala is crisp, sweet and has pink/yellow streaks.
Granny Smith is lime green and tart.
Lady Alice, McIntosh, Cripps Pink, Braeburn, Empire and Cameo I have not tasted but they are on my list to try.
If it is true that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then we have plenty of apples for our choosing. An article on the Internet gave ten health benefits of eating apples. Bone protection, Asthma help, Alzheimer's Prevention, the lowering of cholesterol, lung, colon, and liver cancer prevention, Diabetes management and weight loss. Seems to me, that apples might help us be healthier!
"Why do we need so many kinds of apples?
Because there are so many folks.
A person has right to gratify his legitimate taste.
If he want twenty or forty kinds of apples
for his personal use.....he should be accorded
the privilege. There is merit in variety itself.
It provides more contact with life, and leads
away from uniformity and monotony."

Honey Crisp is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I am beginning to believe: Different strokes for different folks!
ReplyDeleteI just read an article in Cooking Light Magazine (April 2017)that our continent has had more than 15,000 varieties of apples over history. Some growers today are bringing back Nodheads, Granite Beauties, Pitmaston Pineapples...
