Interesting Book Discussion

On July 21, 2015, the Spirit of Christ Catholic Community book club met to discuss The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. It is a story about slavery, the beginning of women's lib, Quakers, good and evil, cruelty and the strength of women. There was an enthusiastic discussion among the twelve women, and the lone man present, as different aspects of the book were discussed. At the end of the book Kidd mentions that what got her thinking about the oppressed women was something she read at the museum showing The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago. The two Grimke sisters interested her after reading about them at the museum.  Chicago painted forty-five plates depicting women who had done something in the world to overcome oppression.

I remembered that in the late 70's, I had been given  The Dinner Party and since it pertained to the book we were discussing, I dug up my book from the past and passed it around so everyone could see the different and unusual pictures painted on the plates. A short paragraph in the book is about the Grimke sisters who are featured in The Invention of Wings.

The hostess had cinnamon rolls, lemon cakes, coffee and tea for the group and we relaxed in her beautiful home to listen to one book club member, who had finished writing a story, tell us about her journey in writing her book. She believes she may call the book, Wicked Eden, though she is still debating on how she will  title her book. When asked how long it took her to write the story she explained how, daily, she wrote for months. She is self-publishing and mentioned that The Tattered Cover and Amazon will carry the book. The book club felt happy and proud that one in the group had ventured out to become an author.

After the meeting, four of us went out for lunch at Larkburger and continued our conversation of the book plus other bits and pieces of our lives.
